Hiking at Lake Kanopolis

I was recently hiking with some friends at Lake Kanopolis in Kansas. This has to be my favorite place to hike in Kansas. Absolutely worth the visit. The photos are online here.

Carnahan Creek

I went to the Carnahan Creek area this fall hoping the oak trees would have the color that they did last year here. The trees weren't that spectacular, but the sumac was really pretty for a few days. Click here to view some of the photos I took.

Swede Creek Road

I've been out several times this fall shooting with Dad, on this trip we went down the Swede Creek road and found lots of interesting stuff to photograph, including some Bison in the area. Photos can be found here.

Marshall County Fall Photos

I'm behind in getting my news page updated with where I've been shooting, so this is the first of several quick updates. Here are some photos I took in Marshall County, KS earlier this fall. Some storm clouds were moving in and provided some nice shots.

Wildflowers at the Seitz Ranch

The wildflowers this year around Northeast Kansas are amazing! Last Sunday I went to the Seitz ranch in Riley County and took some photos of the wildflowers growing there. I've posted a gallery of the photos here. If you have a chance, get out and see the wildflowers this year, I've never seen anything like this before in this part of Kansas!
Peace.

Chase County and Tall Grass Prairie National Grasslands

I recently visited the Tall Grass Prairie National Grasslands near Cottonwood Falls and Strong City in Chase County, Kansas with a couple of friends. We visited the Chase County Courthouse, the oldest operating courthouse in Kansas and did some photography there and then stopped at an old railroad depot and a cementary before hiking the nature trail at the Tall Grass Prairie. You can find some information on the Tall Grass Prairie Grasslands here and info on Chase County here. This is a good place to visit and look around, both on the Prairie and in the towns of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City. If you are driving down from Manhattan, an excellent place to stop for some food is the Hays House Restaurant in Council Grove (which is also a neat town to explore). My color photos from this trip can be viewed here and my Infrared Photos here. Hope you Enjoy!

Peace.

Washington County Wheat Fields

It seems like every summer I plan to photograph some wheat fields (I am in Kansas after all!) and always manage to find the fields I want to photograph have already been harvested. This year I did manage to get some photos of some wheat fields during a recent trip to Washington County, Kansas with my Dad. At the end of the evening we found a pasture with an amazing display of wildflowers and then were treated to a beautiful view of the sunset with a windmill in the foreground to photograph. You can view the shots from this trip here.

Alcove Springs Photographs

Earlier this spring I went to Alcove Springs to take some pictures with my Dad. I had been to Alcove Springs before shooting, but I wanted to be there when there was a lot of water flowing. With all the spring rains we had this year, we thought this was the time. Alcove Springs has some very interesting history, it was on the Oregon Trail and was a stopping point for many people making the trip west. You can read more on the history of Alcove Springs here. If you are in the area, this is absolutely a place to go visit. You can view some of the photos I took this spring here. I will be shooting this place more in the future for sure.

Carnahan Creek Hike 6-8-07

Besides shooting with my UFM class, I have also recently been out to Carnahan Creek on Tuttle Creek Lake doing some shooting. Some info on the trails in this area can be found here. With all the recent rain, the water level in Tuttle Creek Lake is high! A lot of the Carnahan Creek area is under water (including campsites). Compare the photos above, both show the same restroom, you can see the camping area behind the restroom is dry in the fall picture (bottom pic) and flooded in the one from the 8th (top pic). I was at the trails fairly early while the light was still harsh so I ended up shooting a lot of IR photos with both a Sony Cybershot and Canon 20D. The IR shots can be seen here and color images from the hike here. Poison ivy was thick around the trail in spots. I didn't bring home any ticks which was nice, though I'm sure they were out in force! I've had really good luck keeping ticks and chiggers off me by treating my clothes with permanone (permethrin).

Marlatt Park Photos taken on 6-14-07

I took my photography class to Marlatt Park (south side) for this week's field trip. This is one of my favorite places to go for a short walk with Buddy (the best dog ever!). The park is very pretty and a good place to photograph wildflowers and birds. Buddy and I have seen deer, turkeys, quail, and owls there while walking. I've posted s few of the pics from this trip here.

St. Mary's Photo shoot

I went to the town of St. Mary's yesterday with some other members of the photography group we have started in Manhattan. It was a good trip. St. Mary's was founded in 1847 and has some interesting history. You can read up on it here. We took some shoots on the college and around some grain elevators in town. I've put up a gallery of some of my shots here. I ended up shooting both color and infrared (IR), using both my Canon 20D and my Sony Cybershot for the IR. Even though I can't control the camera settings when using the Sony in "nightmode" for the IR, I think it still gives the best results.
